Certified reduction of „greenhouse“ gases in GIKIL’s Fertilizer Plant

GIKIL against global warming

We are witnessing global warming and the fact that the world is appearing to be getting warmer because of Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. These include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and others.

The Kyoto Agreement is an important international environmental agreement between most of industrial countries as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Signatories to the agreement have undertaken to reduce GHG emissions before 2012, and at the same time it will assist economic growth in developing countries.

This is known as the Clean Development Mechanism, and carbon credits are known as "Carbon Emission Reductions" (CERs).

Nitrous Oxide (N2O) abatement project in Fertilizer Plant

Fertilizer Plant at facility for nitric acid production emit small amounts of nitrous oxide, which is a potent GHG.

Nitrous oxide is also used as an anesthetic and in food packaging.

Intent is to install secondary catalyst at GIKIL Fertilizer Plant in Lukavac, which will reduce nitrous oxide emissions.

Project will generate CERs to be traded on world carbon market.

Installation of this catalyst will not require significant changes to the existing plant.

This project is being implemented in cooperation with the certified firms N-Serve and JM-Germany-England with whom GIKIL signed a Contract of project implementation on 25.02.2008.

Registration and development of the projects are taking a place according to the rules of the international trade emissions system - KYOTO PROTOCOL

The aim of the project

  • To reduce nitrous oxide emissions by installing of secondary catalyst at facility for nitric acid production
  • Current N2O emissions without catalyst is 1200 ppm.
  • N2O emissions with the catalyst is reducing at 200 ppm
  • Financial income based on evidence of reductions

Basic steps for project development

  • Installation of automated monitoring system
  • Collection of project documentation
  • Preparing of consultation for local stakeholders
  • Planning of activities for sustainable development
  • Preparations for the necessary technical changes of factory

What it means to GIKIL and you

  • The project will not introduce any new environmental contaminant.
  • The project will not materially improve local atmosphere.
  • But it will play a part in reducing Global warming.
